Hello FBYC members:

This is an update regarding the COVID-19 situation at FBYC.   The goal of these updates is to keep track of this rapidly evolving pandemic and to inform the membership on its effects on the operations of the Club. On Monday April 6th we had our first ever virtual Board meeting where we discussed our present situation regarding COVID-19 and numerous other club related concerns.

This Board is focusing on these three main goals

  1. To preserve the health and safety of our members and staff.
  2. To preserve the integrity and maintenance of our facilities and finances.
  3. To be ready for the resumption of normal operations, when permitted to do so.

The worldwide infected have surpassed 1,762,533 people with 107,705related deaths. In Canada, there are 22,559 infected and 600 deaths and almost half of those deaths, 253 are in Ontario.  We must do all that we can to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Recent Development in Government

In an effort to decrease the spread of COVID-19, the Ontario Government has increased the list of non-essential businesses to include companies like Canadian Tire, Home Depot and even some construction site that were initially considered essential.  Many companies are limiting purchases to pick up only.  The latest updates on COVID-19 from the province can be found at https://covid-19.ontario.ca/.   Live streaming news can be found at  https://www.cbc.ca/news

In the latest declaration, the Ontario Government has deemed that "all communal or shared, public or private, outdoor recreational amenities" are to be closed.  As such, FBYC is closed and will remain closed until it is permitted to reopen.  The situation is evolving rapidly, and our efforts are helping to slow the outbreak, but we must continue to be vigilant and focus on proper hand washing, coughing etiquette, no touching of your face, physical distancing and staying home.

Most recently, on Friday Aril 3, 2020, the Premier Ontario shared what the recent COVID-19 modelling revealed. The model is estimating that“ between 3,000 and 15,000 deaths related to COVID-19 are predicted with current public health measures in place, compared to a total projected100,000 deaths if no action were taken.”  For more detail check out this link below.

In order to comply with the Government’s instructions and keeping with what other clubs in Ontario have done as well and to save lives,  for your own safety and the safety of others, please stay away from the Club and comply with the directives of the Ontario Government.

The only exceptions to this are the designated Board members who are required to inspect our facilities and ensure that everything is in order.  This includes monitoring the water level and addressing flood damage prevention and critical maintenance as required.  This is in accordance with the Ontario Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act.

At this time members are prohibited from bringing their boats to the club and working on their masts or docking their boats at the club. Frenchman’s Bay Marina have stopped the launching of boats as well and will begin once they are permitted to do so.

What we are doing

Special measures such as issuance of the state of emergency and the closure of non-essential business orders implemented by the Province are temporary measure and usually last for two weeks and is then lifted or renewed. The Board is monitoring the situation closely and are evaluating various contingencies in the event this situation is prolonged.  We will monitor the situation closely and inform the membership of any new development as it unfolds.

Due to the uncertainty, the Board realizes that the season will be delayed.   If it is a slight delay, for example mid to late May, we will still be able to get almost a full season with the coordinated efforts of multiple work parties.  Ian MacKimmie from Frenchman’s Bay Marina is also promising to launch boats seven days a week working twelve-hour shifts once the restrictions are lifted.  If the restrictions last to June or July, then we will be experiencing a shortened season no different than what we have experience in 2017 and 2019 with poor weather and the high water levels limiting our use of our boats and access to the other clubs around the lake.

Regardless of when the restrictions are reversed the club will manage financially.   The club still has an obligation to maintain the facilities, lease, insurance and utilities must also be paid.  Dock maintenance including the new service dock will still need to be completed.  Therefore, membership and slip fees are still necessary and must be paid for us to meet our obligations.

When we are permitted to reopen the club, we will evaluate the most effective way to prioritize work to ensure the club becomes operational in the least amount of time.  We will also ensure that members have enough time to prepare their masts and that we can step the masts properly, safely, and in accordance with government directives. Dinghy members will also be allowed to bring down their dinghies and get them ready for the season.

Please be mindful in continuing to stay safe and keep healthy.   Remember to always demonstrate proper hand washing, keep two meters apart, don’t touch your face, cough in your sleeve and stay home unless necessary to go out.   Safety and health are a common responsibility and we all must continue to do our part.  We have saved lives and will continue to save thousands more by simply doing what we are already doing.

Please continue to be patient.  The temptation to get on the water is real but so is COVID-19 and we have done great thus far.   The club will be there when this is over.  By doing what we are doing today will ensure that we will see each other at the club and on the lake soon.
